Specialist papers often contain important analysis and detailed evidence. Before submission, it can help to read the manuscript once as an editor and once as the intended reader: can both follow the line of thought without having to reconstruct it?
1. State the contribution plainly
Can a reader identify the question, why it matters and what the paper adds? The introduction should establish this without making the reader wait until the conclusion to understand the purpose.
2. Check the structure against the argument
Each section should have a clear role. Methods, analysis, evidence and implications need to appear in an order that supports the reasoning. Headings should help readers navigate the paper rather than simply repeat broad topic labels.
3. Make technical explanations navigable
Technical language may be essential, but the reader still needs a route through it. Define terms when they first become important, explain why a calculation or model matters, and use tables or examples where they make a complex point easier to grasp.
4. Read for consistency
Check that key terms, abbreviations, variables and labels are used consistently. Look at figures and tables in sequence: are they introduced in the text, labelled clearly and connected to the point being made?
5. Check fit and requirements
Read the target journal’s current author instructions. Confirm article type, length, formatting, anonymisation, references and required declarations. These are practical checks, separate from editorial judgement about the research itself.
6. Separate editorial questions from research questions
An editor can help identify unclear reasoning, gaps in explanation or places where the manuscript’s structure obscures its point. Authors remain responsible for the research design, data, analysis, citations and technical accuracy. Editorial preparation cannot guarantee acceptance or replace peer review.
